JUST ANNOUNCED!
A new summer "Movies Nights in the Backyard" night for Friday, August 11th at the Hotel Irvine
showing the movie,
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them!"

I recently attended a viewing of "La La Land" at the last "Movie Nights in the Backyard" event and had a fabulous time! I was really impressed with what a great fun experience this was and how well run the event is too! From the minute you walk in it's an easy experience with the friendly folks from the Hotel Irvine greeting you!

You basically bring your own blankets and low back chairs and make yourself comfy on their gorgeous secluded lawn area. One nice thing I noticed is that unlike some of the free movies in the park events, they control the # of tickets sold so it never got ridiculously crowded.  I do suggest you bring a blanket as it can get chilly in the evenings!

You are allowed to bring your own food BUT they also offer a wide variety of food available for purchase including their yummy backyard BBQ with freshly grilled burgers, chicken wings, and other foods like salads and sandwiches. They also have beer, wine and cocktails available for purchase to round out your Friday evening under the stars.

One other nice touch is the snack bar which is fully loaed with TONS of old school movie snacks like your favorites candies, ice cream, cookies and of course, freshly popped buttered popcorn!

The price for general admission is only $5, and you can buy them at the door but I HIGHLY suggest you buy yours ahead of time as the last two events SOLD OUT!

They also offer a limited number of VIP experiences too which includes the following:
  • Two tickets to the movie of your choice
  • Reserved front-row seating with your very own picnic blanket
  • Unlimited access to Chef’s Backyard BBQ and movie night snacks
  • A bottle of red or white wine
  • Complimentary valet parking
All this for ONLY $45 - pretty great deal and sells out FAST so if you're interested I suggest you high-tail it over to their website ASAP!

New Sunset Celebration Menu at Las Brisas!

Have you been to Las Brisas restaurant in Laguna Beach lately? If not you may be missing out! If you're like me and grew up in Orange County you've inevitably been to Las Brisas many times as it's practically an OC staple for first dates, birthday celebrations, family brunch, you name it! Of course, with its gorgeous ocean views and yummy Mexican food it's a great place any day of the week really!

The talented Chef Johannes Bernau, Las Brisas' Corporate Chef, explained how in an effort to keep things fresh and up to date, they recently revamped all their menus from breakfast to dinner. Even their infamous brunch menu has been updated and includes some new surprises!

I recently had the opportunity to check out the new Sunset Celebration Menu in their Seaside Cantina and I have tell you, the food here is definitely up to a new level!

The menu has something for everyone from the sinful Nueske's Bacon Sliders to the vegetarian friendly Pomegranate Goat Cheese Tacos. Here is just a sampling of a few of my favorites dishes from their new menu:

Baked (Queso) Fundido - really unique baked in phyllo dough! Delicious!

Hamachi Sashimi w finger limes & grapefruit -
so fresh with jsut the right amout of citrus!

Blistered Shishito Peppers
Nueske's Bacon Sliders using thick cut bacon and
topped with a flavorful chimichurri sauce! A MUST order!
The vegetarian Pomegranate Goat Cheese Tacos.. soo good you'll forget they're meat-free!
The Seaside Cantina is a great place to relax, enjoy a summer cocktail and a tasty bite. They also have live music and a gorgeous wall of Tequilas that'll keep you entertained for awhile just oohing and ahhaing at them all!  Summer is the perfect time to visit and check out their new menu while taking in the gorgeous views.

The Sunset Celebration Menu is served only in the seaside cantina from 5pm to sunset. Las Brisas is located at 361 Cliff Drive in Laguna Beach - right off PCH. They have valet parking for a fee but there is also quite a bit of metered parking on Cliff Drive if you're coming just to enjoy Happy Hour in the cantina.

Enjoy, and tell them OCFoodieGirl sent you! ;)

West Coast BBQ Classic!

Fun at the West Coast BBQ Classic at the Queen Mary!

Is there such a thing as TOO much BBQ? NEVER! ;)

This weekend I attended the West Coast BBQ Classic at the Queen Mary and had SO much fun sampling everything from ribs and pulled pork to the yummy yum Mac Crack BBQ Attack! It was an all around good time with eating contests, line dancing, and a great band playing some country favorites!

First off, what a gorgeous location and view! This fabulous event took place at the Queen Mary's event park which is adjacent to the ship herself - great location right on the water. Luckily, the weather more than cooperated as it was a beautiful sunny (but not too sunny!) day in Long Beach!

One of my favs - the Mac Crack BBQ Attack-
layers of mac n cheese, pulled pork & topped
with crunch garlic topping. YUM!

.
There was even BBQ'd BACON candy
at Uncle Al's!
AND delicious smoked BBQ baked beans from Smoke Hound BBQ!

The even had dessert...bbq'd bacon in maple bacon nitrogen icecream made on the spot from Creamistry! YUM!

This was such a fun way to spend a day! I would highly recommend this fabulous event to anyone in the future  - especially any BBQ fanatics, of which I know there are many in the OC!

Have you been to Ms Alice in Costa Mesa?!

A hidden gem in Costa Mesa!

The adorable decor in this Alice in Wonderland themed speakeasy is reason enough to visit but wait til you try the delicious food and tasty cocktails!

Everywhere you look is a playful reference to the beloved childhood book & movie, "Alice in Wonderland."  The movie itself is even playing silently on one wall of the speakeasy, with cozy couches set up to watch it if you're so inclined!

The cocktails here are whimsical (of course!) like the speakeasy itself, AND very tasty! Pictured here are is the Chiquita Bonita gin cocktail & the Queen of Hearts champagne cocktail. The cocktails are season, like the menu for the most part so the menu will change.

The food at Ms Alice was equally delicious! One of my favorite dishes was the baked brie which was baked inside of a baguette and drizzled with honey. Can you say SINFUL?   Other standouts were the mushroom pasta and the chocolate cake made with of all things mayonnaise!
Baked Brie

Mushroom Pasta - so yummy!\
Crab Dip

The amazing chocolate cake

Ms. Alice is most definitely worthy of a visit even if it's just for a couple cocktails and to check out the fun decor. It's hidden behind Mansion Nightclub, although not affiliated in any way. Open for dinner only, 6:30PM+ Tues-Thursday, 6PM+ Fri & Sat. Closed Sunday & Monday.

Ms. Alice is located at 841 Baker St in Costa Mesa
Reservations highly recommended, especially on weekends.

New Restaurant Review: Hendrix in Laguna Niguel

There must be something in the water in South Orange County cuz all of a sudden it seems like some great dining options are finally opening up down south! The newest addition being the set to open this weekend, Hendrix  -- brought to you by the owners/operators of Driftwood Kitchen & The Deck in Laguna Beach.

First off, the restaurant itself is gorgeous - a mix of warm woods and modern metals with pops of color throughout.

As you walk through the space it almost feels like separate little intimate areas - they have a gorgeous lounge to the side with cozy circular seating as well as a private room for small groups.

The main dining room itself has a really nice ambiance and wide roomy seating - no elbow to elbow dining with strangers here!

There are also these gorgeous wall size windows that open up to reveal a distant view of the ocean from the southernmost seats.

It's quite amazing what they've done with the expansive space as it used to be a Fred's Mexican Kitchen - which no offense to Fred's but it's definitely an upgrade!

We started off the evening with cocktails - which almost deserve their own review here! You can really tell a lot of thought went into every detail of the drinks here. From the name of the restaurant - which actually stems from the favored gin here (Hendricks) to the use of the namesake whiskey (The Duke) of one of the owner's grandfathers, John Wayne - yes, THAT John Wayne.

Every drink we tried was fabulous but the two standouts IMHO were:
The Lighthouse
1) The Lighthouse - a mix of reyka vodka, white cranberry juice, lime sour & fresh cantaloupe juice - this was light and fruity but not overly sweet. A great cocktail for a warm day or to go with a slightly heavy meal. Loved it!

The NetZero
2) The NetZero -  gin mixed with carrot juice, turmeric, lemon sour & parsley. Yes, I know my first thought was also of something you'd find in a juice bar but this is definitely cocktail fare folks plus you can sip it guilt-free knowing you're getting some good stuff in you at the same time! ;)

Hendrix also has an expansive wine list and wine by the glass list, as well as a draft beers by the bottle and on tap. At some point the plan is to also have a small wine store in house to allow diners to pick out a bottle for dinner at near retail price - quite a nice touch for the wine drinkers!

The food itself at Hendrix is billed as "New American" which assimilates flavors from the melting pot of traditional American cooking techniques. Dishes include popular cuts of fish, steaks and chops as well as some amazing rotisserie items with interesting and flavorful accompaniments and appetizers reflecting seasonal availability and quality.

Admittedly, the real stars of the show are the rotisserie (or Roti, as the menu deems them) items. You can order them individually or as a mixed plate to sample all the different offerings. Some of the standout dishes from Hendrix’s rotisserie include spit-roasted Porchetta, Rosemary-Lemon Chicken, and Colorado Leg of Lamb. All of which will be available for takeaway and in-house dining as entrees or shareable platters.

Everything we tried was delicious and well prepared but there were a few dishes in addition to the Roti, that blew my fellow diners & I away and should be on your MUST try list when you visit Hendrix. These included the following:

  • Roti Chicken and Prosciutto Fritters, served with a thick creamy house made tzatziki sauce. These were addictive and we had to force ourselves to stop eating them to save room for other menu items! You could make a semi-indulgent meal out of these!
  • Grilled Spanish Octopus, served atop a bed of hummus and sprinkled throughout with a harissa olive vinaigrette tomato dressing - this was almost too pretty to eat and tasted just as wonderful! Tender octopus which can be easily overcooked was cooked to perfection here with a slight char to it.
  • Hendrix Salad with Roti Chicken, crumbled goat cheese, loaded with sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, slivers of avocado and studded with dates - vibrantly fresh flavors that shine though with a generous portion of the roti chicken to ensure a portion with each bite! Admittedly, it didn't look that impressive upon first being served but the flavors quickly won us over as it was one of our favorite dishes of the evening!. It's also a great way to try the roti meats while staying with a relatively light meal, and it's easily a meal all by itself!
  • Buratta Cheese, served fluffy like frosting atop a spaetzle nuesky bacon muffin and topped with roasted blistered tomatoes, all atop a small river of pesto - delish but definitely made for sharing as a tad heavy but even so, a dish you MUST experience! Lovely and creative dish!
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake for desert - moist and thick, served with an indulgent crème anglaise. Can't beat this as your final bite to a fabulous meal!

All in all I was VERY impressed with Hendrix and am confident they are going to do quite well in their new location, next to a luxury movie theater in an area that is somewhat lacking with comfortable upscale yet still affordable dining. With the loss of Savannah Chophouse in the same center this area has been crying out for something a little nicer and more creative than what's currently in the area.

Note: Hendrix is slated to open on Saturday, April 8th but that is tentative.
I'd call to confirm before you head over!

HENDRIX
32431 Golden Lantern in Laguna Niguel.
They'll be open for dinner only at first from 4 - 11pm. Sun - Thurs and 4 - midnight Fri & Sat.

Word is eventually they'll be doing lunch as well as brunch on Sunday.
